This recording from 1996 opens with an inventive composition entitled "Serpentine", a moody, yet spirited exercise in trio dynamics. Drummer Harvey Sorgen weaves in and out of Michael's tantalizing staccatos, and sporadic jumps before bassist Steve Rust introduces us to a little walking of his own. Pensive, introspective, yet conversation abounds during this opening number which sets the overall mood for the reset of this excellent recording.
Throughout, all three musicians are playing a joyful cat and mouse, ever searching, and utilizing the concept, and importance of space. Popularized by Thelonious Monk many years ago, and practiced by countless musicians, this trio helps one realize that without space in music, there can be no open communication, breathing, and fundamental joy. Stevens and Sorgen have worked together on many other recordings (The Wish, and Parallel Lines), displaying their keen ear for adventure.

Last summer at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, Sorgen, Stevens and Fonda were one of the highlights of this ten day festival. Holding the crowd spellbound into the early morning hours. This recording is highly recommended for its musicality, interaction, and seamless improvisation.
